Jennifer Williams, owner/founder of Saint Louis Closet Co. and Saint Louis Cellars, has been nominated for the inaugural First Lady Awards. The award, established by Missouri’s First Lady Melanie Blunt, will be given to five history-making Missouri women during Women’s History Month in March.
Jennifer opened Saint Louis Closet Co. in 1991, the most successful local custom closet business in St. Louis and saw profits last year of just over $6 million. Along with her husband, she created 22 Company in 1996, a property management company that now owns and operates over 150 rental units in Maplewood. She saw great upward potential in this centrally located area. The historical buildings, the eclectic mix of locally owned businesses and the central location were all signs to Jennifer that the area would become a more prominent force in St. Louis in the future, especially for those people who could not afford to live or operate businesses in the more expensive areas like Clayton or Webster Groves. In November 2007, Jennifer branched out of closets and real estate to open another Maplewood business: Saint Louis Cellars, a retail wine store, which is connected to the newly renovated $6 million Saint Louis Closet Co. building.
Since opening Saint Louis Closet Co. in 1991 with just herself and a van, Jennifer Williams has grown Saint Louis Closet Co. to a multi-million dollar company that employs over 50 people, opened a brand new wine store and helped to reinvigorate a city. She has become not only one of the most respected businesswomen the bi-state area, but one of the most respected businesspeople, period. The First Lady Awards will be given to honor women in each of the following categories: business and innovation, culture and humanities, education, health and wellness, and volunteerism. Mrs. Blunt will recognize honorees on March 4, 2008 at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion. For more information regarding the First Lady Award, visit gov.missouri.gov/firstlady/.
