5 Summer Storage Ideas for Families

It’s summer. The kids are out of school and underfoot. Unfortunately, so are their toys, swimsuits, sports gear, craft projects, and everything else. Plus, there’s that pile of winter clothes that haven’t been put away yet.

It’s time to get organized.

Every home needs a place for kids’ items, the backpack or bicycle helmet or pair of shoes that always ends up in an untidy pile by the door. At Saint Louis Closet Co., we’ve got a few solutions that help reduce the clutter and give you back your sanity.

Reclaim Space in Your Home with these 5 Storage Ideas

(1) Lockers for Kids

Lockers aren’t just for high school. If you can get your kids in the habit of keeping backpacks and jackets in a specified location, they’ll learn organization, a skill that will certainly help them down the road.

As one of our clients said, “I cannot count the number of times that I have told my kids to stop throwing their backpacks and jackets on the closest piece of furniture the second they walk in the house. The solution for our family is lockers and cubbies in our mudroom, so that every time my kids walk in the door, the closest piece of furniture is a cubby and hook specifically designed for their belongings. This also works wonders for sports equipment and sports bags.”

If you have a convenient space by the door, or in a laundry room or playroom, consider adding lockers or cubbies. Install them now, and you’ll thank yourself when school comes around. Available options at Saint Louis Closet Co. include benches, baskets, rotating locker hooks, shelves, and more.

(2) See-Through Storage

Many of us have a toy box or storage box for our kids. How often, though, does that space become a catch-all for everything from shoes to legos? A better solution is see-through storage. With chrome pull-out baskets, adjustable shelving, and clear glass doors, you can keep items like art and craft supplies well organized. This will also help children learn to store like items in the same place. Saint Louis Closet Co.’s chrome and white baskets are a great option for existing shelving units.

This way, everything has a space and kids know where to find items like sports equipment, art supplies, or stuffed animals. By putting kids’ stuff on lower shelves and breakable stuff on higher shelves, you can create an accident-free area. Custom shelving from Saint Louis Closet Co. helps you organize your belongings in a way that makes sense for your lifestyle.

(3) Custom Bookshelves

We all want our kids to read more over the summer. One clever way to do this is to display books in a way that will make kids want to reach for them. Take a look at this custom solution:

Custom bookshelves are versatile and adjustable. In a child’s room, they can change as the child grows, and as tutus give way to letter jackets. In a closet, they can be adjusted when it’s time to switch out snow boots and scarves for flip-flops and bathing suits. Every system that Saint Louis Closet Co. installs is 100% adjustable. Just ask!

(4) Kids’ Office or Craft Space

Many families are turning a spare room into an office or craft center, with spaces designated to hold anything from personal files to wrapping paper. If you have a teen who likes to express herself with photos and keepsakes, or a kiddo who might just be the next Picasso, creating a space like this is a perfect way to encourage them, yet keep the house organized and tidy. With fabric boards and pull out tray shelves, we can create a space for everything you treasure.

(5) Mudroom and Entry Hall Ideas

The whole family can benefit from a custom-built unit in a mudroom or entryway. Our units can include hooks for jackets, spaces for shoes, and drawers for scarves and gloves. Benches, fabric boards … anything you need to make your life less stressful and more convenient, we can do. As we move from winter to summer and back again, these spaces can accommodate everything you need for each season.

If You Can Imagine It, Our Designers Can Deliver It

If you’d like to speak with a designer about adding lockers, building an organizational unit, or creating a customized kid’s space for your home, let us know! We can give advice and show you designs that will help your home become a tidier, more comfortable place.

Saint Louis Closet Co. Spring Clean-up!

Spring is the perfect time to get organized, and Saint Louis Closet Co.’s Spring Special is just in time to help you with your projects.  From Master Walk-in Closets to Pantries and Murphy Beds, Saint Louis Closet Co. can create more space in your home.

Along with the new season – and with summer right around the corner! – it is once again time to reorganize the spaces in your home. If you have a Saint Louis Closet Co. system, this would be the time to re-adjust your shelves to be able to comfortably store your growing children’s clothing and shoe inventory.

With summer coming, shoes and accessories are one thing that are going to require reorganization for this season; for example, switching out your kids’ snow boots and scarves for their flip flops and pool towels. Our 100% adjustable systems give you more room for doing just that. Just add, remove, or adjust a shelf to make room.

I cannot count the number of times I’ve told my kids to stop throwing their backpacks and jackets on the closest piece of furniture the second they walk in the house after school or soccer practice. The solution we have found at our home is lockers and cubbies for our mudroom, so that every time my kids walk in the door, the closest piece of furniture is a cubby and hook especially designed for their belongings. This also works wonders for sports equipment and sports bags.

Teachers can even find some organization for their classrooms this school year. Getting all the pencils, markers, glue, blank paper, books, construction paper, scissors, and miscellaneous supplies organized will make the school year go just that much smoother.

Saint Louis Closet Co. designs every type of system to meet everyone’s organizational needs, and that includes classroom supply closets, mail centers, storage rooms, lockers and even kid’s home desks.

Saint Louis Closet Co. Laundry Rooms!

The laundry room may be the most overworked and underappreciated room in your house. Very few homes have laundry rooms efficiently equipped for the task of doing laundry from start to finish. Laundry, like many things, is done in a processes: retrieval, sorting, loading into washer and dryer, removal, folding, and putting away. Ill-equipped rooms do not provide space for sorting and folding, so those jobs end up being done in other parts of the house, and the chances of the steps being finished completely, are minimal.

Saint Louis Closet Company has a solution for every stage of the laundry process. We can help you design units utilizing our chrome baskets for pre-sorted laundry, telescoping rods for pulling things out of the dryer to hang or for items waiting to be ironed. You won’t have to use your bed or kitchen table to fold laundry anymore if you have a convenient folding counter in your laundry room.

Laundry rooms often become the catchall for miscellaneous odds and ends. We have ways to store and hide it all. We can design locker units for families to store all kinds of necessities, like backpacks, coats, hats and more. Cleaning products can be stored privately behind cabinet doors, and broom and mop hooks are a great way to hold longer items.

The days of laundry rooms being located only in basements are gone. Laundry rooms can be found everywhere in the home, including off the kitchen (mudroom), on the 2nd floor, and in Master bathrooms. Designing your laundry room for efficiency and style is a smart choice with our laminate wood finishes in a variety of colors, and rods available in chrome or brass.

January is National GO (Get Organized) Month, so start off your new year with a more efficient laundry room and make getting laundry done easier for everyone.

Please come check out our closet factory and showroom in Maplewood, MO. Saint Louis Closet Company is the ideal choice for all of your laundry needs. Please call us for your free estimate, (314)781-9000.

St. Louis Closets for MOM!

THE ULTIMATE CLOSET—FOR MOM

Having a disorganized closet can add hours to your week and stress to an already stressful life. According to Newsweek magazine, the average American spends 55 minutes a day looking for things they know the own but cannot find.

A Saint Louis Closet Co. “well-appointed closet will help shed the emotional weight that having a disorganized environment brings.” Treat your closet as you would any other room in your home—function, aesthetics and comfort.

Before investing in a custom closet system empty your closet and go through your clothes item by item removing clothing you no longer wear or doesn’t fit. Remove clothing that needs alterations, dry cleaning or repairs.

Clean your entire closet—consider painting walls a bright fresh color. Analyze the lighting in your closet—bad lighting makes it hard to see behind doors and distinguish between blacks and navy’s.

Strive to provide visual access to all areas of your closet and your clothing—sometimes open shelves are the best way to go. Drawers are perfect for under garments, stockings, pj’s, and socks.

Once you have a plan—consult with a Saint Louis Closet Co. professional closet designer and get started.

Make sure your new system incorporates double rods for separates, and varying height rods for dresses and medium lengths skirts and slacks. Adjustability is always the key. Styles change, your own personal lifestyles changes and you want to make sure you closet can change with you. Adjustable shelving and rods that can be moved from the floor up are vital to really make the best use of your space.

Saint Louis Closet Co. accessories are like the icing on the cake—adding function and fun to your closet. Make sure to add a pull-out belt rack for belts and purses and a telescoping rod for your dry cleaning and outfit selection.

Celebrating 25 Organized Years

Anyone would agree that good organizational skills are a fundamental qualification for starting your own business. And in 1991, Jennifer Quinn Williams did just that, opening the doors of Saint Louis Closet Co., the first locally – owned St. Louis closet company that installed custom organizing systems crafted to stand alone (floor-based) and fit the exact dimensions of a customer’s closet.

Saint Louis Closet Co. has grown from modest means. In her first semester of graduate school, while working part–time, Jennifer decided to do what she loved – organize and change people’s lives. Then, in October of 1991, she approached the Small Business Administration (SBA) to learn how to go about starting her own business.

That November, she decided to try her luck at a start–up loan. Jennifer’s tenacity paid off and she received a call from the loan officer that the SBA and the Bank had approved a loan for $35,000.

What about the additional $15,000 she needed? Jennifer just forged ahead; trusting that early sales of her new closet systems would bring in the balance of money necessary to stay in operation. They did. So, at the ripe old age of 25, Jennifer had not only graduated from Saint Louis University and begun graduate school, but she also had begun to set up and operate her own business. That rst year would realize $236,000 in sales, an amount that has been exceeded by over 2500% in 22 years.

Jennifer’s roots are tied to St. Louis having grown up in Kirkwood and graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1984. This hometown entrepreneur then went on to St. Louis University to earn a B.A. in Communications and Public Relations. “I really enjoy owning and operating my Business in St. Louis,” says Jennifer. “There’s a great feeling in knowing that you’re helping your community and providing your neighbors with a superior product at the same time.” “St. Louisans love to buy from locally-owned companies, not franchises.”

Jennifer’s hometown connection makes a difference, especially when it comes to the company’s charitable and civic endeavors. Jennifer’s list of involvements is already an impressive one. She’s donated to her local alma mater KHS, and Saint Louis Closet Co. has installed closets at The Magic House, Glendale Lutheran, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Forsyth School, John Burroughs School, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Our Little Haven and Friends of Wings.

40 under 40

Jennifer is involved with and has supported Children’s Hospital, Fontbonne University, St. Louis University, Forsyth School, John Burroughs School, The Maplewood Betterment Foundation, The Kirkwood Public Library, Juvenile Diabetes, Aim High, Girls on the Run, Our Little Haven, Ready Readers, The Susan G. Koman Foundation and the The Leukemia Foundation to name a few.

When Jennifer started Saint Louis Closet Co. she knew the importance of surrounding herself with quality people. “Our company’s biggest strength,” notes Jennifer, “is that of customer service. All 40 of our employees strive for excellent customer service. They continually try to exceed our customer’s expectations.”

Jennifer is proud of the product Saint Louis Closet Co. offers. “We have a unique system,” comments Jennifer. “Where many other closet companies hang closet organizers on existing walls – a practice that is not as secure or as adjustable as our product, we provide a safe, floor–based closet system built of our laminated shelving that is totally adjustable from the floor to the ceiling,” says Jennifer. “You have the ability to adjust, add or subtract from your closet system at any time.” By offering a variety of laminate colors, Saint Louis Closet Co. is not just limited to the closet. Murphy Beds, Laundry Rooms, Playrooms, Lockers, Craft Centers, Garages, Pantries and Home Offices are all products offered by the company.

“Almost all closet installations take less than one day, and since we manufacture our own systems in our custom closet factory,” says Jennifer, “we can turn orders around quickly. This gives us an edge over our competition.” There are no pre-made parts or sizes, so Saint Louis Closet Co. closets are TRULY custom and cut to size for your closet.

All the closet systems are designed, manufactured, and sold out of her 30,000 square foot headquarters in Maplewood with its state– of–the–art machinery, which allows the company to make its own product 100% custom.
